Hymn to Ares

by Lady Bella Sundancer
Hail Ares, Lord of War
You come thundering forth
In your mighty chariot, Eris by your side
Your sword flashing, your eyes shooting sparks
You have a lust for battle, a yearning for the fight
What if men die, what if they bleed
What fun it is to sweat and strain, test your mettle
Pretty Aphrodite tends your wounds
And you are up, ready and roaring for more
You will fight for every cause, no matter how trivial
For it is the art of war that is your joy
Not why men fight and struggle
You throw your spear, swing your sword, block with your shield
The war-lust a heavy shroud in your eyes
You are a proud leader, a rallying cry to battle
You are a fierce protector, guarding you and yours
Whatever you fight against, beware
You hear the clang of armour and hop happily
Into your chariot, riding off to fight again
Bleed again, fall again, rise again
Your temper flares quickly but cools just as quick
You are youthful and virile, smooth and slick
From one battle to the next you never give up
But fiercely fight on and on and on and on and on
Lord of Strength, we ask for your blessing
In each battle we fight, each foe we face
